Think You Won’t Get That Job? You’re Right.

A wise man named Henry Ford said, “Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right.”

Attitude is a key component of success, especially when you’re interviewing for a new job. You may have entered an interview thinking, “I’m too old…” or “They probably want someone who fits the job description better than I do…” or even “I’m sure they’ve already picked someone from inside the company.” Then, when you don’t get a job offer, you say to yourself, “See? I was right. I AM too old, etc.”

If you cross off your own name from a list of viable candidates, why shouldn’t a hiring manager do the same?

Confirmation bias is the tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of one’s existing beliefs or theories. The more negative your attitude, the stronger your confirmation bias (and vice versa).

Whenever I interview candidates, I look for someone with a positive attitude. Even if a candidate had the right skills, if I detect any undertone of “Woe is me,” I cross off that person from my list of candidates.

Focusing on what you can and can’t control can make or break your job search. Try changing your outlook and focusing on strategies to stay positive, and you may end up with a brand new confirmation bias: your skills are, indeed, in demand.

Whether you believe you’ll succeed or believe you’ll fail, you’re right. Wouldn’t you rather be right AND receive a job offer?
